Education
The factors that impede young women and girls’ education, economic security, and sexual reproductive health rights is fundamentally enshrined in household poverty. Human Rights Watch (2023) highlighted poverty as a key indicator responsible for the high rate of girls dropping out of school. For example, despite the free quality education Initiative the lack of financial resources seriously affects young women and girls from low-income households to access education. According to the Purposeful 2021 Report, 43% of girls in Sierra Leone had never attended school, while 35% among those who attended school dropped out of school during their Junior Secondary School period, with only 7% reaching Senior Secondary School. This reality leaves them vulnerable to harmful coping strategies, such as early marriage, commercial sex work, street hawking, drug intake, theft, and teenage pregnancy. Hence Thimzy is here to ensure a smooth transition from Junior Secondary to Senior Secondary and then tertiary education while advocating for access to quality education.
Economic Security
Economic security in Sierra Leone is a pressing concern, particularly for vulnerable women and girls. Economic security refers to stable income, access to resources, and opportunities that enable individuals to meet their basic needs, contribute to society, and plan for the future. However, in Sierra Leone, widespread poverty, limited access to education, and gender inequality hinder women’s ability to achieve financial independence.
In the labor market, women are more vulnerable than men, often engaged in precarious employment. The World Bank’s Country Gender Action Plan for Sierra Leone highlights the need to boost women’s livelihood options and wage earnings, particularly for young women in rural areas. This includes enhancing access to skills training, equal access to inputs, and business management support. For example, the digital landscape, a layer of inequalities. As of 2020, only 5.7% of women in Sierra Leone accessed the internet, compared to 11.4% of men. This gap persists due to factors such as high data costs, limited digital literacy, and inadequate policy frameworks addressing women’s online rights.
Women’s economic empowerment is directly tied to economic security. When women and girls have access to financial resources, skills training, and employment opportunities, they are better positioned to break cycles of poverty, improve their quality of life, and contribute to national development. In Sierra Leone, empowering vulnerable women through economic programs not only enhances their well-being but also strengthens communities by increasing household income, improving children’s education, and reducing dependency.
Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR)
Sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) in Sierra Leone remain a critical issue, particularly for vulnerable women and girls. Despite some progress in policy and advocacy, many women and girls—especially the vulnerable —still face significant barriers to accessing quality reproductive healthcare, comprehensive sexuality education, and protection against gender-based violence (GBV).
However, strive has been made in policy and framework development but despite these policies, enforcement and implementation remain weak, leaving many women and girls without adequate SRHR services.
Hence these existing gaps affect women’s and girls’ education as many drop out of school due to early pregnancy limiting their chances to economic opportunities. It will further expose them to gender-based violence and reproductive health challenges especially sexual violence leading to forced pregnancy and unsafe abortion. Data from Goal Global indicates that 46.8% of adolescent deaths in Sierra Leone occur due to pregnancy and childbirth complications.
However, if vulnerable women and girls can access SRHR services it will reduce their likelihood of poverty, sexual health challenges, and maternal mortality
